Pierre Birnbaum is the current visiting professor in Jewish studies at the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies. He recently retired from his position as professor of political sociology at the Sorbonne, where he taught for many years. He is the author or editor of more than thirty books on Jewish history, political science, and sociology, and is one of the world's leading experts on French Jewish society as well as on theories of the state. At Columbia he teaches in both the Department of History and the Department of Political Science.
