Now emeritus, Professor Goren was the Russell and Bettina Knapp Professor of American Jewish History. He was the 1998 laureate for Historical Studies for the National Foundation for Jewish Culture. He has written numerous articles and review essays for American and Israeli academic publications. Goren's New York Jews and the Quest for Community: The Kehilla Experiment is considered a landmark contribution to the field of American Jewish history. He has also authored Dissenter in Zion: From the Writings of Judah L. Magnes, The American Jews, and will soon publish The Politics and Public Culture of American Jews. Professor Goren serves on the Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society, and on the editorial boards of American Jewish History, the Journal of American Ethnic History, and the YIVO Annual of Jewish Social Science.
