Jonathan Dekel-Chen is a Visiting Professor at Columbia University's Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies and the School of International and Public Affairs. He serves as the Rabbi Edward Sandrow Chair in Soviet and East European Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Dekel-Chen brings deep expertise in modern Jewish history, nonstate diplomacy, transnational philanthropy and advocacy, agrarian history, and migration. In addition to his teaching and other work for SIPA, Dekel-Chen will teach one undergraduate Jewish Studies course with IIJS each academic year.
Dekel-Chen served for many years as the academic chairman of the Leonid Nevzlin Research Center for Russian and East European Jewry at Hebrew University. He has also served as chairman of the Russian Studies Department and of the Jewish History Department at Hebrew University. He has been a visiting professor and research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers University, Columbia’s Harriman Institute, and at the Kennan Institute.
