Red Inks and Gold Leaf, Parchment and Paper: Conservation of the Corfu Manuscripts

  • The Norman E. Alexander Library for Jewish Studies 420 West 118th St. New York, NY 10027 This is a Zoom Event (map)

To celebrate the incredible work of the Conservation Team that worked to make the materials safe for exhibition, we will be hosting a zoom panel on November 7 at 12:30 PM EST called “Red Inks and Gold Leaf, Parchment and Paper: Conservation of the Corfu Manuscripts” *This is a ZOOM Event

The joint exhibition on the Jews of Corfu at both JTS and Columbia involved a tremendous amount of behind the scenes work to ensure that the materials currently on display could be exhibited safely and preserved for the future. In addition to extensive work from the Libraries' conservation team, and thanks to a generous gift from the Norman E. Alexander G Foundation, the Libraries hired Katherine Parks, who spent months working to conserve the materials to be displayed, especially the illuminated ketubbot. In this talk, Katherine and staff from the Libraries' Conservation Department will discuss the behind-the-scenes magic of preparing the books and manuscripts for exhibition.
